故事发生在七十年代初期我国沿海某军事要塞，这是一个由几十个大小岛屿组成的军事重地。主人公石林，石光荣的大儿子，要塞最偏远的海岛上一名普通的炮兵。岛上单调的生活令石林整日没精打彩，牢骚满腹。一天，石林跑到海边喝醉酒不小心摔伤了，被送进卫生队。在那里石林结识了才华横溢但神情忧郁的左太行，这是一个的走资派的儿子，被下放到无人岛上种海带，非人的生活已将这个天之骄子折磨的几近精神崩溃的边缘。
