Although the backtracking process requires some time and cooperation between ISPs, it is not impossible. However, it will be more difficult to prevent distributed SYN flooding attacks launched by attackers using the advantage of the number of hosts in the network. As shown in FIG. 3, these host groups can use direct attacks or further let each host use spoofing attacks.

Both these attacks and SYN flooding target the victim's TCP application and can interrupt the victim's service at much less cost than brute force flooding packet methods. However, SYN flooding is very different from other TCP spoofing attacks. SYN flooding attacks the services of the new connection without affecting the established connection, while other spoofing attacks break the established connection and cannot block the new connection from the beginning. SYN attacks can be stopped only by modifying the initial handshake program, while other spoofing attacks require checking every piece of data throughout the connection life cycle. What SYN flooding and other TCP spoofing attacks have in common is that they all depend on the attacker's ability to send IP packets that disguise the source address, while the same way to defend them is to deploy more address filtering or use IP Security Protocol (IPsec).
