故事始于上世纪70年代末，杨三在下放农场期间，为了霸占知青李青，引爆了一场荒谬的“捉奸”事件，将李青的初夜恋人高建军送进了监狱。后来杨三与李青结了婚，返程后住在昆山县城，然而他们一岁的儿子却是高建军（保剑锋饰演）的亲骨肉，正是这种情感隐患的存在，家庭暴力逐渐升级，最终在一次厮打中两个人同归于尽，而事发在场的工厂师傅刘桂兰（凯丽饰演）不慎卷入其中，慌乱之下，畏罪逃跑被通缉，开始了流亡生活……
茂源老汉分完家，原来的那个家几乎散了，茂源老汉仍然默默关心着枣花，眷恋着枣花娘。但茂源老汉终于没能敲响枣花娘的屋门，他被金锁叫回家，等候儿女决定他的命运。小庚以4000元的价码和铜锁达成协议，最终得以和枣花成亲。枣花和小庚结婚后似乎很幸福，但小庚不让她出去干活，不许再跟葛家人来往，精神的禁锢又给了她一种新的折磨；钟情于小庚的香草只好把满腔怒火倾泻在苦苦追求她的小豆倌身上。苏小个子欲对狗剩媳妇不轨遭到痛打。香草不甘委曲在村里，和豆倌连夜离家出走。狗剩媳妇与铜锁彼此产生好感，并决定结婚。枣花娘在河边小树林遇到茂源老汉，被苏小个子和小庚看见，于是引起一场轩然大波。枣花娘伤心地出走他乡，河水夺去了她的生命。娘死后，在枣花再三恳求下，小庚终于答应她到镇上大栓的饭店去工作。苏小个子为了挤垮大栓的饭店，诬陷大栓勾引枣花，而巧姑半阴半阳的回答更加重了小庚的疑心。最后他竟砸了饭店。小庚的狭隘自私使枣花心灰意冷。感情上产生了深深的裂痕……
